When a tree has a lot of branches or multiple stems, it can put a lot of pressure on the trunk. Brace rods and cables are used to stabilize the tree and decrease this pressure. They are made with extra high-strength steel, usually galvanized, and are secured to the upper crown of the tree with bolts drilled into the wood. Tree braces are installed to prevent the branches of a tree from being broken by stormy weather. The brace is installed by going through the weak branch union, which in turn supports the branch itself as well as any other branches that may be attached to it.
